Waste management in Barrancabermeja: commitment, technology and environmental compliance

Gestión de residuos en Barrancabermeja: compromiso y tecnología y cumplimiento ambiental

Barrancabermeja, Colombia's oil capital, generates more than 60,000 tonnes of waste per year. To address this challenge, Veolia has implemented the San Silvestre Intelligent Ecological Management Centre (CIGE), an innovative environmental solution that seeks to protect natural resources and improve the quality of life of Barrancabermeja residents.

Located in the village of El Zarzal, 20 kilometres from the urban area, the CIGE San Silvestre operates on a 30.6-hectare site licensed by the Santander Regional Autonomous Corporation (CAS). Its management focuses on ordinary non-hazardous and non-industrial solid waste, promoting decarbonisation, decontamination and efficiency in the use of resources.

The impact of the CIGE on the District is significant: every month, 5,000 tonnes of waste are managed, 18,269 kilometres of roads are swept and cleaned, and socio-environmental activities are carried out that benefit more than 12,000 people. In addition, the maintenance of green areas covers 100,647 m² of mowed lawns and the pruning of 2,591 trees per month.

With international certifications in quality, environmental and occupational safety management, CIGE San Silvestre has established itself as a benchmark for ecological transformation in Santander. Veolia reaffirms its commitment to a sustainable future, integrating technology and environmental compliance for the well-being of the community.
